- DIRECTOR:
Alfred Hitchcock
- ACTORS:
Carl Brisson, Malcolm Keen, Anny Ondra, Randle Ayrton
- PLOT:
A poor sailor (Brisson) and wealthy lawyer (Keen) fall in love with the same woman (Ondra), leading to a particularly thorny love triangle when the presumed dead sailor returns to the woman he had intended to marry.
- EVALUATION:
A pretty decent silent drama from Hitchcock, helped substantially by a strong performance from Ondra and some interesting background scenery.
- WRITING:
Based on a novel by Hall Caine.
- FILMING:
Occasionally inspired, but mostly what Hitchcock would have called the work of a talented amateur.
- BEST PART:
When the sailor temporarily hallucinates a second setting at his dinner table instead of a note attached to a wedding ring.
- TRIVIA:
Ondra would go on to marry boxer Max Schmeling.
- STINGER:
A shot of that baby who looks a little like Hitchcock.
